Last week, our church’s Church and Society/Social Justice Committee finished the last postcard writing campaign with Reclaim Our Vote for the 2022 mid-term elections. Starting in March with the primaries, volunteers from First Church and Mirabella retirement center reached out to voters in six states where voting restrictions and gerrymandering have made it difficult for disenfranchised voters to have their
voices heard. The simple, nonpartisan messages in the postcards are focused on important issues for each state and include information on the voting logistics for each location. A total of 8,960 postcards were written!
Organized by Nickie Askov, Mirabella writers wrote 5,260 of those! (Well done, Nickie and Mirabella!) The postcards last week were written to registered, consistent Black voters in Georgia who may not have clear, accurate and timely information about voting in the Run-Off Election between Herschel Walker (R) and Rev. Raphael Warnock (D). This is an important election. Regardless of the outcome, the Democrats will have the Senate majority with Vice President Harris as tie-breaker. But, if Rev. Warnock wins, it gives the Democrats a one-seat advantage.
This has been another stressful election cycle, but writing the postcards has given people an opportunity to make a difference for postcard recipients who received information, and most importantly, encouragement that they are important and their choice needs to be counted! Thank you to everyone participated, whether it was 20 postcards or 120. It made a difference.
