The Work of Christmas | Christmastide Season 2024-2025

“When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among others, To make music in the heart.” -Howard Thurman

Introduction:

Christmastide is the season between Christmas and Ephiphany, the 12 days of Christmas. During this time, we remember that the Work of Christmas is just beginning anew as we reflect on the hope that comes with the birth of Christ on earth and remember that Christ taught us to care for the poor, free the oppressed, and to love God and neighbor. Each day, you are provided with an opportunity to study and reflect on the work of some of our partner organizations related to our priority areas as a faith community. You are also invited to use this form, as many times as you like, to note your interest from the “Action” suggestions below: https://firstchurchseattle.breezechms.com/form/0c9494 (or use the QR code below).

Day One: Wednesday, Dec 25th – Christmas

“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for see, I am brining you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10).

Focus: First Church’s Shared Breakfast Program – Each Sunday morning, we serve a warm meal to anyone that is hungry.

Action: To understand the harm that has been done by Western society to the Indigenous People in North America, we need to immerse ourselves in learning experiences. Consider setting up a group to go visit the Duwamish Longhouse Cultural Center in Seattle and then reflect on that experience, or sign-up to participate in our Land Acknowledgement Next Steps Sub-Committee, or express your interest in participating in a S.L.A.M. Focus: The General Commission on Religion & Race (GCORR) (https://www.gcorr.org/) – GCORR was started in 1968 “to hold the newly formed United Methodist Church accountable in its commitment to reject the sin of racism in every aspect of the life of the church.” Our Bishop has called us to continue working towards eliminating racism in our society. One way we do that is by examining our own privileges and studying the perspectives of persons without the same privileges as ourselves.

Action: Consider participating in our First Church “in their own words” book study group, or get a group together to visit art exhibits that represent cultures other than your own, or attend an event held by Seattle Arts and Lectures to hear from artists, poets, and authors about their life experiences.
