Dear First Church,
I write to offer my resignation as Pastor of Congregational Care effective June 30, 2023. It is with mixed feelings that I do so, as I have very much appreciated the opportunity to serve among you since last September. Jane and I have been enriched by inspiring worship, meaningful spirituality, and significant outreach opportunities, in addition to making many new friends. In the year and a half of our involvement, Seattle First has become our church home, and eventually we will be back. In the meantime, Jane will remain a member, as will I in my Charge Conference membership, and we will continue to support the vibrant mission and ministry of the church with our pledged gifts.
But now a new opportunity beckons, and I have accepted a similar position at the Puyallup United Methodist Church. It is half-time, and will involve some additional responsibilities in worship participation, occasional preaching, and adult education. Additionally, it will mean a much easier commute of only 16 miles, rather than the 30 that I drive to First Church. Honestly, that has been the only drawback of my work with you. An hour or more each way has increasingly worn on me, so when I was invited to consider this new position, that became a major attraction.
I will always be very grateful for Pastor Jeremy taking a chance on me (“I was a stranger, and you took me in”), and for the warm welcome and acceptance the congregation has consistently offered. It has been a privilege to work with him, as well as a very dedicated and able staff, and this deeply committed congregation. I will continue to pray for Seattle First’s faithfulness and fruitfulness in the journey ahead.
Sincerely yours,
Doug
