Midterm Election Voter Advocacy

Midterm Election Voter Advocacy

“…but let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

Amos 5:24

The Church and Society/Social Justice Committee is organizing a postcard writing campaign for the 2022 elections through the Center for Common Ground-Reclaim Our Vote (ROV).  The postcards are written to people in states that have been known to purge voters from the rolls or that have been passing more restrictive voter access laws.

The postcard recipients are given their voter registration office contact information and ask them to check their voter registration status and make sure they are eligible to vote. The names and addresses of recipients are public information and come from ROV and their local or state voter registration offices. This is the same campaign that the Church & Society/Social Justice Committee did for the 2020 presidential election. It’s a reminder that ‘your vote is your voice!’

As a postcard writer, you will receive a packet with 20 postcards, stamps, a prepared script and the names and addresses of 20 people to whom you will send the postcards. Packets are available once or twice a month depending on the frequency you wish to write. (You are expected to write the cards you receive within 2 weeks). Each packet cost about $9 for the supplies.

Here are our target states, and the dates of their primary elections at this time:

  • North Carolina primary May 17
  • Alabama and Georgia, primaries May 24
  • South Carolina primary June 14
  • Virginia primary June 21
  • Arizona primary  August  2
  • Florida primary  August  23
  • Louisiana primary November 8 (tentative)

You probably understand the critical importance of the upcoming midterm Congressional elections and the State level elections occurring throughout this year.  Control of both houses of Congress is up for grabs.  At the same time there will be races for governor and state legislative seats which as we have seen impact voting rights dramatically. If you want participate in this campaign, contact Sue Porter at seporter29@yahoo.com and include your address and phone number. You will receive more information in the near future. (Please note that this is different than her personal email.)
