The Climate Justice Working Group (CJWG) is pleased to report a sound response to the Earth Pledge campaign. So far 45 members and/or families have made pledges for 2023!
- The bulk of pledges (60 percent) focus on cutting household waste (e.g., less use of packaging and plastics; increased reuse, recycling and composting; and reduced food waste).
- 11 are focused specifically on reducing or even eliminating food waste.
- Another 11 pledged to reduce household ecological/carbon footprints via energy and water conservation, as well as renewable energy retrofits (e.g., heat pumps, induction ranges, and solar panels).
- 11 also pledged to cut transportation carbon footprints via increased carpooling, biking, walking, use of public transit, or converting to an electrical vehicle (EV).
- Five pledged to engage friends and family members in conversation and education about the climate crisis.
- Four pledged to reduce consumption of meat and dairy, and adopt a more plant-based diet.
- And four pledged to take action–via protest and advocacy–to help end the production and use of fossil fuels.
Earth Pledges are part of First Church’s vision to care for all of creation and take action on climate justice–a journey we are taking together. Those of you who made Earth Pledges can anticipate gratitude, encouragement, and support throughout 2023 in fulfilling your commitments from an CJWG Earth Pledge Companion. We are grateful for your commitments!
