Meaningful Movies Event: Criminal justice reform, racism, and mass incarceration

The Church & Society/Social Justice Committee is hosting a February 26 Meaningful Movies event at 12 noon focused on criminal justice reform and dismantling the U.S. system of mass incarceration. The event will feature a panel of speakers, including Tiarra Dearbone, Program Director for Seattle/King County Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program, which provides ‘community-based care for people who commit law violations related to behavioral health issues or extreme poverty.’ We will also discuss the film True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality, which highlights Stevenson’s work with the Equal Justice Initiative and efforts to address systemic racism in the U.S. criminal justice system.

Please register using the link below. Once you have registered, you will receive a link to access the film and the event. You are invited to watch the film before February 26 (please note that the film will not be screened at the event itself), but If you are not able to watch the film before February 26, please feel free to join us to hear the speakers and the discussion! Registration is required for all attendees, regardless of whether they watch the film in advance.

This event is open to all, including First Church members and the wider community.

Note: This is a virtual event, but the program will also be shown in the Fellowship Hall of First Church, especially for those who may not have adequate travel time between the end of the church service and noon when the event begins. Please bring a bag lunch if you wish. Snacks and coffee will also be available.  Please register for the event even if you plan to watch it at church
