ROLE DESCRIPTION 

The purpose of the Security Shepherd at First United Methodist Church of Seattle (located at 180 Denny Way in the lower Queen Anne neighborhood) is to:  

  1. Ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all guests and volunteers who attend Shared Breakfast, a hot, nourishing breakfast served from 7:30am to 9am every Sunday for our community’s most marginalized residents; and 
  2. Ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all who attend worship services at First United Methodist Church of Seattle on Sunday mornings. 

POSITION TYPE

This is a contract position for an open-ended project. Either party may terminate the contract with 15 days’ notice to the other.

TIME

The contract allows for a maximum of 8 hours per week. This role requires an individual to be on-site. A typical shift in support of Shared Breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 9:15am and in support of worship services from 9:45am to 11:45am. There may be times when the shifts are extended for special events such as memorial services, weddings, the Annual Pride Parade, etc.  

RESPONSIBILITIES 

(for Shared Breakfast) 

  • Prepare for guest arrival, including marking the sidewalk with chalk at 6 ft increments to manage the line of guests
  • Communicate process for obtaining breakfast as guests arrive 
  • Monitor behavior of guests to ensure safety of guests and volunteers
  • For guests who wish to eat their breakfast inside Fellowship Hall, allow them access
  • Respond to conflicts that develop between/with guests with the specific goal of de-escalating the conflict
  • To the extent that de-escalation techniques do not work and the situation requires it, call for a police response. 

(for worship services)

  • Distribute masks to those who request them
  • Monitor the Narthex and church parking garage to ensure a safe environment
  • Ensure that all those participating in worship services do so in a respectful manner to other worshipers and to church staff
  • Respond to conflicts that develop amongst those attending worship services with the specific goal of de-escalating the conflict
  • To the extent that de-escalation techniques do not work and the situation requires it, call for a police response.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
  • Techniques for de-escalating conflicts 
  • Ability to stand for most of a shift (chairs are available for periodic breaks)
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (the church will pay for this certification if the Shepherd does not currently have the certification). 

Employment offers are contingent upon passing a national background check.

COMPENSATION:

$30 per hour during Shared Breakfast and $25 per hour during the worship service. This contract will require an individual to invoice First Church on a monthly basis and will receive an annual 1099 for services.

POINT OF CONTACT

The point of contact for Security Shepherds for the Shared Breakfast shift will be the Shared Breakfast Opener/Manager on site. This is a rotating group of experienced program leaders who will identify themselves to the Shepherds at the beginning of each Sunday program. The point of contact for Security Shepherds for the worship service shift will be the Senior Pastor. The administrative point of contact will be the First Church Business Manager.
