Our Mission
We're out to change the world. How do we do it? As a congregation of the United Methodist Church, we affirm that our mission is "to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." This mission has its roots in the Bible (Matthew 25 and 28) and contains the distinctively United Methodist emphasis on social change as the end result of our religious faith.
United Methodists have been leaders for over 200 years in establishment of hospitals, colleges, and social service agencies that make life better. We believe that every disciple's objective is to make the world a better place, and we put that in practice in our congregation's Core Process statement: "Love, Grow, Serve" that describes just what a disciple does. These steps lead our members to greater joy in living, greater depth in spirit, and greater impact as we serve - and transform - our world.

Meeting Needs
First Church has been tending the soul of the city for 150 years. A big part of our decades-long ministry has been serving the homeless with meals, shelter, and advocacy. Continuing this tradition, we currently offer Shared Breakfast to the hungry on the second and fourth Sundays of each month.
First Church serves and speaks for the poor, neglected, and marginalized.
Our commitment to the homeless of Seattle includes direct, face-to-face help like Shared Breakfasts, as well as advocating for political and social change at all levels. We are participants in King County's effort to end homelessness within ten years. We're informed and active on issues of global warming, world peace, hunger, gender and sexual equality, and racial justice.
First Church builds community.
All people are welcome at First Church. Differences in race, age, economic status, and sexual orientation are simply markers of the complexity and beauty of God’s human creations.
First Church is on the move.
On March 30, 2008, we moved from downtown to Seattle Center, marking a new chapter in the more than 150 year history of this congregation. Our new building on Second and Denny is expected to be ready for Christmas 2009, but we’re already becoming an active member of our new neighborhood. |
