Chancel Furnishings Arrive In Time For Pentecost

One of the handful of remaining projects of the former Building Advisory Board is completion of the new chancel furniture. Commissioned late last year, the new furniture includes a lectern, altar, baptismal font, and pulpit. Of special interest is the preservation of our church historic pulpit, parts of which form the structure of the new pulpit.

Photographic documentation form our archives shows the same pulpit being used from as early as 1889 until our 2008 departure from the Fifth and Marion building. This would make it the oldest liturgical object in continuous use in the City of Seattle. The brass portions of this historic pulpit consist of intricate brass work created by the J. and R. Lamb Company of New York. This firm is widely recognized as one of the most important influences on liturgical art in America. The local fabricator for the new chancel furniture has carefully removed the historic brass portions of the pulpit and included them in the framework of a new pulpit made of cherry wood to match our pews.

Each of the pieces will be installed on May 23, with the exception of the baptismal font, which will follow a few weeks later. Once all the pieces are in we will have a special dedication ceremony to celebrate and dedicate these beautiful new furnishings.

Note: watch in mid-June for the installation of the new stained glass window in our church's narthex.
