Congregation Cuts Pollution

Faith In Action: Congregation cuts 538 pounds of pollution in one Sunday

On Sunday, May 16 we took the challenge to "get here greenly", coming to worship via bus, bicycle, carpool, or walking. The congregation rose to the challenge beautifully, saving almost 500 miles of travel and cutting 538 pounds of CO2 pollution! Here's the stats, which combine transportation figures from both services:

  • 499 miles saved
  • 26 gallons of fuel saved (based on average 19.5 mpg)
  • 538 pounds of CO2 gas avoided (based on 1 gallon of fuel creating 21 pounds of CO2)

The United Methodist Social Creed reads, "We affirm the natural world as God's handiwork and dedicate ourselves to its preservation, enhancement, and faithful use by humankind." Congratulations on putting our faith into action!

How to "Get Here Greenly":

  • Carpool: One exhaust pipe is better than two! A church small group that meets in your neighborhood is a great place to start looking for a carpool companion. If you're not in one of these groups already, see the small groups roster to find one and let the church know you're looking.
  • Bicycle: The church is accessible from both the Myrtle Edwards Bike Trail (which connects Ballard to West Seattle and the Duwamish River Trail) and the Dexter Ave Bike Trail (connecting Downtown to Fremont, Wallingford, Green Lake and the Burke-Gilman Trail). Free bicycle parking is available near the Denny Way entrance to the church building. More information on these trails.
  • Bus: The church's convenient location in central Seattle is served by many, many King County Metro Routes. To find out which bus goes from your house to the church, use Metro's easy Trip Planner, or call Metro Customer Service at (206) 553-3000. Also, see info on some great phone apps, below.
  • Walking: If you live close to church, walking is a great way to get your cardio in with little effort. Walkers are in good company - Senior Pastor Sandy Brown has been known to walk 3.5 miles to church on Sundays!
