Young People’s Ministry News
Young People’s Ministries trying on new hat and mittens
The Church’s ministry to young people has some exciting adjustments in programming this year. Parents have received information regarding this, and we know “All Y’all” would want to know a bit more about these pieces as well!
First for what is not changing. Sunday morning education will remain at the 9:30 hour with engaged and creative teachers who love kids. (Don’t forget to thank them for their good work!)
Now, for the changes:
> We now have two options for Grade School-aged kids during the 11:00 hour! The amazing Patrick Ferguson and Julie Sullenszino will be working with the FIRST INSPIRATIONS CHILDREN’S CHOIR. There will also be an invitation to get to know the Bible stories more intimately by acting out the stories of faith. Shannon Park-Beck and a rotating volunteer will be helping out with this! LIVING THE BIBLE will be just perfect for kids who may not quite be ready to be in a choir – or who are more interested in acting. The curriculum accommodates everyone, whether your child reads or not.
> Children 4 and older will stay through worship on communion Sundays. Why, you may ask? Studies show that kids who remain in worship with their parent or a trusted friend absorb the traditions we value by just participating in worship with us. In fact, it is one of the top 3 factors in growing mature and grounded followers of Christ. Is there a little more noise and wiggling sometimes? Yes. It is the noise of belonging. When children feel they are integral to the life of the church in all ways, and develop meaningful relationships with other adults, they stay involved in faith communities throughout their lives. What more could we want? The nursery is always available, as is the foyer in the back if your child needs to stretch. Kids will be sure to grab a worship bag from the ushers to give them some extra hands-on things to do.
> Duuna Evans is teaching once/month using food as her medium! We are super-excited about this development, too. Beginning in October, kids pre-K through 4th grade will be spending part of 3rd Sundays with Duuna in the kitchen. Think foods of the liturgical seasons, foods of faith, engaging hands and mouths in learning. More details to come!
> Middlers (Jr. High/Middle School) are hanging out on some temporarily borrowed furniture and enjoying a foosball table donated to us by another UMC congregation.
> Be the Change 101. Senior High students are working on some important material this year. After going on pilgrimage and completing Confirmation, youth will be exploring the Biblical call to peace and justice, exploring their own sense of call/vocation, and examining others who have listened closely to God’s call to co-create a world of peace. Ask them about it when you see them.
Things are looking good around here. Thank you for loving our kids so well – and committing to their faith development and well-being.
